Join the UMass Amherst School of Public Health and Health Sciences for a night with Dr. Steven Kassels as he talks about the current heroine epidemic. The talk will focus on 10 reasons for the heroine epidemic, and will take place in the UMass Amherst Integrative Learning Center room N151 at 7PM on December 7th. Dr. Kassel's book, Addiction on Trial: A Tragedy in Downeast Maine, a story with messages of societal discrimination toward drug addicts and misunderstanding of what drug addiction really is ? a chronic illness requiring a similar treatment approach as other chronic diseases ? is woven into the intrigue of this thriller. Dr. Kassels will have a book signing at the UMass Campus Center Bookstore from 1-2PM, and also following the talk. ALL proceeds from book sales will go to Craig's Doors, a homeless shelter in Amherst. Dr. Kassels is Board Certified in both Addiction Medicine and Emergency Medicine. He has served as the Medical Consultant to the CARF-Opiate Treatment Program National Accreditation Project; testified at the New Hampshire House and Senate Hearings pertaining to expansion of treatment services for opiate dependent patients; presented on behalf of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health at the Heroin Treatment Seminar; and served as a course facilitator on behalf of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. After earning board certification in Addiction Medicine, Doctor Kassels was appointed Medical Director of the inpatient and outpatient addiction service at Providence Hospital, Holyoke, Massachusetts, providing polysubstance abuse treatment to both adults and adolescents. He is currently the Medical Director and a founding member of Community Substance Abuse Centers, which specializes in the treatment of opiate addicted patients throughout New England.
